Structure

PFL workshops will be structured in two one-week segments.

In the first part (tools and conceptual-scheme), students will construct innovative political arguments by experimenting with the relationship between everyday activities and particular material organizations. In the second part (fabrication-construction), students will work collaboratively on the implementation of some of the schemes that has been selected from the first week’s proposals. This temporary prototype, fabricated on site, will evaluate in real life the potential and achievements of the design.

Phase 1 – Conceptual design
–     Teams of three students.
–     Exploration of possible applications of the design tools in combination with supplied materials.
–     Development of conceptual ideas for social /political performance aspects
–     Jury 1: Both students and tutors vote for design concepts that will continue into the next phase.

 

Phase 2-3 – Fabrication & Construction
–     Teams of six to nine students
–     Development of the selected design concepts, incorporating material processes and performance aspects through testing of concepts on site
–     Pinup: Proposal of final structure
–     Fabrication and assembly of the designs into real-life structures
–     Participants work on specialised topics such as fabrication drawings, assembly coordination and site management
The workshop will end with a public presentation of the finished structures. The presentation will be open to architects, the public and press in a local public space, and will be followed by a reception and event involving the workshop structures.
